How Y2Standby Works

When a newspaper makes plans for a given day's page count, they allot a certain number of pages to editorial content and a certain number of pages to advertising. Each day the paper has a main section, sports, lifestyle, local, business, and classifieds. Each section is allotted a certain number of pages that must be filled.

A problem occurs when the newspaper has a last minute advertising cancellation. This leaves a page open - and decreases the newspaper's revenue.

So instead of having a smaller section or trying to write more editorial content, they instead sell the space to certain marketing companies that can fill the space with standby ads on an as needed basis. The ads must be pre-submitted and flexible to run in any section on any day needed (within a 2 week window). This allows the paper to get some revenue and allows the standby advertisers to get fantastic rates.

What's The Catch?

  • Direct Response Only: Ads must be "direct response," meaning that there has to be a call to action that a customer or prospect would call you for.
  • No Existing Customers: The advertiser cannot be an existing customer of the newspaper. They are not interested in giving their regular customers these kinds of discounts. If this is a deal breaker, call us.
  • Date Flexibility: The advertiser must be flexible about when the ad runs and where it appears in the paper. We will place the ad to run within a 2 week window. When it runs, it can run in any of the main sections (front, local, sports, business, lifestyle). If the ad does not run (about 20% of the time), your client will be charged nothing
